— What to expect
E-Collar RECALL Training Package
- Assessment Session - To assess if your dog is suitable for E-Collar training and explanation of how the E-Collar works. Not all dogs are suitable for E-collar training and there needs to be an acceptable level of basic training displayed prior to any E-collar use. E-collar training is not a quick fix for lazy owners who aren't prepared to put the effort in. It is also very import to understand that the E-collar might not be the answer and unless I am completely satisfied it will improve the dogs quality of life, I will not authorise its use.
- First Training session - This session is all about finding the dogs working level and introducing the dog to the collar in a positive manner. I believe it’s crucial for the dogs training to be fun, exciting but focused. Essentially, I will also be creating a bond and understanding with your dog during this session so that it trusts me and starts to understand what I want them to do. I will introduce the collar very slowly on the lowest settings
- Second training session – This session will be a refresher session for your dog and will enable me to understand how well your dog has learnt and what they have remembered. I will then start training you to use a collar, but this training will be done on me, not your dog. Using an E-collar is all about timing and co-ordination and it is vital that you understand exactly when and how to use the collar. Only when I am completely satisfied that you can use the collar correctly will I allow you to start using it on your dog.
- Third Training session – This session will very much depend on the dogs progression and understanding of the collar. If everything is going to plan I will change the environment and start increasing the distractions. I will only do this if I believe the dog can cope with the added excitement but this is a vital part of the process because essentially the dog must understand the collar and commands when they are distracted by adrenaline.Understanding Adrenaline is absolutely paramount when working with dogs with prey drive. It is crucial that you understand how much adrenaline will effect your dogs thought process and numb their senses when their body starts flooding with endorphins.
- Fourth Training session/final assessment – This is the final session and the day that I will be assessing both you and your dogs progress. We will be in an area that will be perfectly selected due to your dogs particular drive. I will want to see that you have complete control of your dog in any situation with any distraction. Don’t panic because I will be there and I wont allow anything bad to happen but I need to see that you and your dog completely understand the collar. What I expect to see, is a happy dog and a happy owner walking safely in the countryside, safe in the knowledge that you can recall your dog perfectly if needed.
- Please note that this is not a detailed explanation as to exactly what I will do, it is only a brief summary. Every dog is different and every dog responds to the collar in a slightly different way. Experience has taught me how to deal with these situations and I would not recommend using a collar without gaining expert advice and training beforehand.
